Invicta Divers - what is the meaning of   "Invicta"

"Invicta" is the motto of the County of Kent, the "Garden of England".

"Invicta" comes from the Latin "invictus" and means "invincible" or "undefeated"

As a motto for Kent, it dates from the time of the Norman Conquest and William the Conqueror (Guillaume le Conquérant), the Duke of Normandy in France, later to be crowned King William the first of England (1066-1086), and only the third king of all-England.

William's army of 8000 landed on 29 September 1066 at Pevensey Bay near Hastings; the last successful invasion of England.
Two weeks after defeating King Harold the second at the Battle of Hastings on October 14th 1066, William the Conqueror marched on London through the county of Kent.   The people of Kent took up swords and spears cut from kentish boughs and drove William's army away, in an act of bravado, forcing it to bypass Kent and find another way to London.

The people of Kent offered peace and recognition if William would preserve their ancient rights and liberties and William granted concesssions in law that lasted right up to the 19th century.  The people of Kent took the motto of "Invicta" which remains to this day, with the White Horse Rampant, the emblem of fifth century Saxon warrior Horsa.
