PADI Open Water SCUBA Instructor ("OWSI") with Invicta SCUBA School

Your next step up from Assistant Instructor is to become a PADI Open Water SCUBA Instructor and be qualified to teach a range of PADI courses, from Open Water Diver right up to Divemaster, yourself.

You've already come to appreciate that being a PADI Pro is as much about understanding People as it is about understanding SCUBA Diving.

So what is the role of a SCUBA Diving Instructor ?

Is it about spending half your time tanning on the beach in exotic locations, chatting to really attractive people, and the rest of the time bouncing out on the speedboat to the choiciest dives with the best divers ?

Um, 'fraid not.

The final change of thinking to become a Diving Instructor, is the realisation that you will spend the majority of your time indoors in a classroom or pool with novice students, and the remainder in outdoor training locations and simple dive sites.

Having said that, your qualification as a SCUBA Diving Instructor may well be a passport to travelling around the world and working in some of the most exotic and exclusive diving locations in the world.

To sum it up in one sentence, the role of Diving Instructor is:
"to teach people to SCUBA Dive safely and competently"

So as a Diving Instructor, you need to have a love of diving and the underwater world, of course be a competent diver, have the instinct to be a teacher, and be motivated to share your enthusiasm for diving with the students you teach.   You need to get pleasure and satisfaction from using your skills to help others learn, to overcome their challenges and to achieve their goals.

Diving Instruction is a vocational lifestyle.   Unfortunately, instruction alone wont make you rich, although it can be part of a wonderful lifestyle that is transferrable worldwide, and provide an adequate income.

As a Diving Instructor, you will meet lots of people.
- Some you will train and never see again, so you need to be sure all divers are safe and competent before they leave you.
- Some will return and do more courses with you, which is paying you a great compliment.
- Some you will see and dive with regularly, which is a source of friendship and diving buddies.
