Invicta Divers SCUBA Diving School Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q. My son has Asperger's Syndrome.   Can he learn to SCUBA Dive ?

A. Asperger's Syndrome is a classification of Autism where the individual displays lifelong challenging social skills.   People with Asperger's want to be accepted within society but their own physical and verbal responses can be surprising or startling to others, and others' negative reaction to them can prompt hurt and frustration which leads to more extreme behaviour.   The Asperger's individual may find it difficult to sense and relate to other peoples' emotions, wishes, and points of view and may find new and different circumstances or settings perplexing and threatening.

Asperger's individuals respond to being treated like that - as individuals, within a group setting.
With patience and careful supervision, new experiences and procedures can be introduced and learned.
SCUBA Diving can provide a great opportunity to be treated as an individual, whilst still in a supervised and safe environment.   Underwater, you are in control of your own individual world even though still being passively supervised.

Most SCUBA skills are learned-by-doing, and with a set structure of rules and procedures, which Asperger's individuals often respond to.

We like to treat everyone as an individual and give them the opportunity to learn to safely use SCUBA wherever possible.
Everyone is different.   We will work with you to assess the needs of your son and match his needs with our ability to help him to learn to SCUBA Dive in a safe and engaging environment.
